Crafting for a Living Can Make Dollars, Not Cents

- Jessica

Have you ever considered starting a creative business?

Do people tell you, “You should totally go into business making these!”

Maybe you’ve tried Etsy or craft fairs (or both) and are exhausted by the amount of time and effort you put in compared to the payoff.

Crafting as a business can be frustrating, and we’ve been there!

We've spent thousands of hours on crafting business plans, ideas, and projects that were less successful than we hoped.

We've owned Etsy stores, had booths at craft fairs, and even started our own outdoor art market!

For us, none of these ventures made a reasonable profit for the amount of time and money we put into them.

Then one day we came across something new. Our trio was brainstorming new ways to attract customers to the art market we owned (and were losing gobs of money on… but that is a different story). It was October, so we decided to teach a Sugar Skull decorating party at the market. We were surprised when we sold out the first 30 person party in just a few days. We ended up adding 8 more parties and they all sold out, too!

We knew we were on to something as we watched our customer’s eyes light up as they snapped pictures of their creations. We decided to go public with craft parties and started adding new crafts to our menu.

Fast forward three years.

We’ve now been taught over 300 craft parties in public venues, homes, and business conference rooms with almost all of them bringing in $500 to $1000 profit.

Teaching crafts brings us so much more than a fair profit. We adore our customers and enjoy sharing our love of crafting with them. We have been asked to teach parties in some of the most beautiful spaces in Albuquerque and in surrounding cities. We get to make our own schedule, plan events for dates and times that make sense for us, and of course, we get to control how much time we spend on this business.

We’re grateful to have discovered the joy of teaching craft parties, and we can’t wait to support you in getting your own business off the ground and flying!
