I'm Baking Gingerbread in August
Aah! The smell of gingerbread in August. The temperature outside is hovering at 95 degrees. The children are running around in swim suites and bare feet, and I’m in the kitchen baking gingerbread houses.
This is one of the more interesting aspects of being a craft party teacher. In order to keep the chaos at a minimum, you need to be at least one season ahead of the rest of the world. If you’re really on the ball, you are two seasons ahead.
The craft party business tends to slow down in the summer. This can actually be a great thing, because it gives you time to prepare for the craziest, busiest, most wonderful time of year for your craft party business! The more prepared you are for the holiday rush, the more you’ll enjoy yourself, and the more you can profit.
For us, ticket sales are always highest from the day after Thanksgiving until about December 15th. We sell around 600 tickets for public gingerbread house parties, book 5-10 private parties, and sell dozens of take-and-make gingerbread house kits.
We always do really well during this 3 week period, but it requires us to start planning ahead of time, to ensure that everything goes smoothly.
And this is why I’m baking gingerbread houses in August.
For the past few years, our craft for the holidays has been adobe gingerbread houses. Our guests absolutely love them, because they are unique and a reflection of home to New Mexicans. We have guests that return to our parties each year to celebrate the holidays with us.
One of the things we enjoy the most about teaching craft parties is watching what our guests do with the craft we put in front of them. We have had so many guests put our artistic skills to shame, and they introduce us to new ideas we never would have thought of ourselves. We’ve had guests create the most ingenious things with their adobe gingerbread house supplies, from an airplane to a rooftop pool!
Inspired by our guests creativity, we have decided to offer three new gingerbread houses this year. For months, we have been designing the perfect houses. They can’t be too big or too small. They shouldn't be so simple that they’re boring, or so complex that they break easily or are too hard for an eight year old to put together. Our goal is to create gingerbread houses that are easy to assemble in 20 minutes or less, so that our guests have plenty of time to enjoy each other, eat and drink and focus on the fun part, decorating their house. We want our customers to walk away from our parties with something special so they will show it off and tell all of their friends how much fun they had.
Gingerbread houses are absolutely, hands-down, our most popular craft. We're really excited to share our new houses with our local customers and with you. We are putting our final models to the test, to make sure they are perfect. Once they’re done, we will share lots of pictures!
If you want to teach gingerbread house parties too, we have plans to make it easy for you. Our Gingerbread House Craft Party Blueprints will be available by the end of September, so that you can get a jump start on booking parties that your customers will talk about all year long!
